Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find a list of complete and very practical answers. Don’t forget, our experts are best placed to answer your questions.

Am I able to practise driving in my own/family or friends car?

Yes, you are allowed to practise driving with a family or friend in your own car, providing that the following conditions are met:

  • The learner must have a valid provisional driving licence
  • The friend/family member must be over 21 and have had their full driving licence for 3 years and be qualified to drive the vehicle
  • The vehicle must be insured to cover the learner driver

It is a good idea to have some practise in a car of your choice, especially if you will be driving the car after you get your licence. However, if you are also taking driving lessons from an instructor, it can also cause confusion so is sometimes best not to practise in your own car.

Are automatic cars easier to learn to drive?

An automatic car is easier to drive, as there is less work to do whilst driving. With an automatic car, there is no confusion of gears and a clutch pedal as the car selects the right gear itself, which means no stalling! You are in more control of the car making driving a whole lot easier. In the long run, you take fewer driving lessons, save money and will be on the road a lot quicker.
The only disadvantage of learning to drive an automatic car is that you would have to take additional driving lessons and a driving test if you wanted to drive a manual car. However, if you pass your manual driving test, you can also drive an automatic car.

How many lessons will I need to learn to drive?

According to the Driving and Vehicles Standard Agency (DVSA), it takes an average of 67 hours to learn how to drive. This consists of 45 hours of driving lessons with an additional 22 hours of driving practise. This does not necessarily mean that it will take you 67 hours of driving to ensure that you pass your driving test. Everyone is different when it comes to driving – some people pick things up quicker than others, whilst someone else struggles to parallel park, another may struggle on a hill start. The amount of lessons will be dependent on your previous driving experience, age and understanding of the road.

Fast Pass Driving School will ensure you are given the correct amount of hours needed to pass your driving test, whether that is 35 hours or whether it is 50 hours.

How do I book my theory test?
